Attacks on Christians in India

2 October 2008 – Birth Anniversary of Gandhi

THE CHURCH
-ITS PRIESTS AND SISTERS AND OTHER CHRISTIANS-
ARE UNDER ATTACK IN 12 STATES/PROVINCES OF INDIA:
VIZ. BIHAR, CHHATTISGARH, JHARKHAND, KARNATAKA, ORISSA, KERALA,
MADHYA PRADESH, NEW DELHI, PUNJAB, UTTARPRADESH, TAMIL NAIDU, UTTARKHAND

On August 16, 2008 Fr. Thomas Pandippally, of the Congregation of Mary Immaculate, watered the ground with his blood when he was martyred at the hands of Hindu extremists in Orissa, India, -- precisely because he was a Christian. It was only the beginning. Asia News reports that Anti-Christian violence is only getting worse. Since August 24, 2008, 59 Christians have been killed, 18,000 injured, 177 churches destroyed or damaged, 4,300 homes set on fire, and 13 schools and colleges destroyed. The 'All India Christian Council' provides the following breakdown according to Indian States as the wave of persecution has now spread beyond Orissa: ORISSA: 14 districts affected; 300 villages destroyed; 4,300 houses burnt; 50,000 homeless; 57 people murdered; 10 Priests/Sisters injured; 2 women gang-raped; 18,000 men, women and children injured; 149 churches as well as 13 schools and colleges destroyed. KARNATAKA: 4 districts devastated; 19 churches attacked; 20 Sisters and other women injured. KERALA: 3 churches damaged. MADHYA PRADESH: 4 churches damaged. DELHI: 1 church destroyed; attempts made against 4 others. TAMAIL NADU: 1 church attacked. UTTAR PRADESH: Two people, an old priest and employee, have been murdered. Shocked and grieved by the incidents of extreme violence unleashed against the Christian community recently in various parts of our Country, the members of the Dominican Family worldwide express their utter disappointment at the apathy and inaction of the Governments at the Centre and in the affected States.
Our Dominican Family members are among the Christian population that is threatened in India. We have a province of Friars, six apostolic congregations, a monastery and fraternities of the Laity. In light of the crisis there, we urge all Dominicans around the world to write to key officials:

We ask also that you contact diplomatic representatives of India in your country. We offer the following letter as an example for your use with these communications:

Dear (Name):

We write with deep concern over the communal violence that engulfed the district of Khandhamal in Orissa since the eve of Christmas. The violence has led to the death of persons, injury to many and thousands of people have been rendered homeless and destitute. Many houses have been torched and looted. Hundreds of people have fled to the woods. The victims of this violence have been Christians. As of date the Church, its Priests, Sisters and other Christians are under attack in 12 states: Viz. Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Orissa, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, New Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Naidu, and Uttarkhand. The timing of the attacks and the way they have been carried out reveal that there is a dangerous attempt by some forces to eliminate Christians and to annihilate Christianity.

The State has failed in its duty to protect the rights of Christians - protection of life and personal liberty; freedom of conscience; free profession, practice and propagation of religion – the very rights enshrined in the Constitution of the country (Articles 21 & 25) and in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR Articles 18 & 27) to which the Government of India is a party.

It is India’s ancient civilization that is being humiliated and the values such as Ahimsa, Truth, Tolerance, and Respect for Religions that India has jealously preserved for centuries that are being dragged to the dust. It is India’s good name that has been tarnished and her secular and democratic image that has been seriously damaged before the international community. These recent horrors in various parts of our country have disgraced the high ideals and principles that our wise leaders and saints upheld and the vision that our Founders cherished.

Today, we celebrate the birth anniversary of Gandhi: a very special day not only for India but for the entire world. The UN has declared this date - 2nd October - as “The International Day for Non-Violence.” The current crisis in India – and in other parts of our world -- demands that people of goodwill everywhere work to reclaim Gandhi’s commitment to non-violent transformation of society.

In this context, we appeal to you to initiate suitable measures so as to:
Protect the rights and the lives and the properties of Christians in Orissa and other states.
Provide immediate relief and adequate compensation to the victims as per ICCPR Article 2.3.1
Ensure peace and harmony in the affected States so that people may live without fear and may freely practice their faith.

Yours sincerely,

(Signature)

Application form - IDEO inter-faith dialogue 2009 in Egypt

Cairo, 20 September 2008

To the Provincial Priors
and the Regents of studies of the Order
Dear brothers,

You did receive a few months ago a letter signed by fr. Marcio Couto, Socius for the Intellectual Life, and myself, informing you that IDEO, the Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies, based in Cairo is organizing a two-week workshop on Islam and inter-religious dialogue in Cairo for English speaking Dominican students in July 2009 (1-15 July). Several of you have already told us that some of your students might be interested to attend this workshop. We need now to start the registration.

As we told you in our previous letter, this two-week program in Cairo will articulate three elements:
- Lectures on the basic topics of Islam and inter-religious dialogue
- Visit of significant places (Al-Azhar University, mosques, etc.)
- Personal contacts
A visit to Mount Sinai will be organized at the end of the workshop. Everything will be in English.

Would you, please, circulate the attached application form in your province through the regent and student master? We will accept a maximum of 2 students by province, because the maximum of friars we are able to accommodate is 12 to 15. I remind you that IDEO has received a grant from a foundation to help to organize this workshop and will pay for the board and lodging. The provinces will only have to pay the tickets to Cairo and provide some pocket money. If some help is needed, this might be considered case by case.

Thanks for making known this proposal in your province and supporting it. We need to have received all the applications at the end of January 2009 and will then contact all the candidates to see with them the practical details (visas, tickets, etc.).

Contact: jjperennes@gmail.com

Yours in St Dominic

letter of encouragement!

to all my OP brothers!

I have been busying myself for the past few days knowing and improving this blog. It encourages me to know that this humble beginning will be a step towards our vision of collaboration, at least among the OP's in the asia pacific region. Therefore i encourage each one of you to take time to visit, post a blog, improve or update, and tell personal stories, current news and happenings in your respective provinces, priories or houses, news from abroad or other things related to our goal and mission as Preachers of Truth.

The Chinese Dominican brothers in Taiwan will fly today to Viet Nam for a six-day community outing. Please pray with us for a fruitful and safe trip all through out the journey. I hope to meet again with brothers Cau, Ninh, Duy and Hoang. I will surely extend your regards to them. I may not have an internet access in Viet Nam but hopefully will at least update this blog more when i get back. God bless to all and may the Spirit of God guide, lead and teach us our way!

fraternally in St. Dominic,

YHWH

An excerpt from Catholic World News (CWN) Feature Stories on the new Vatican directive on the use of YHWH. For our reference, discussion and understanding.
Vatican directive: "Yahweh" inappropriate for liturgical use (Subscribe to RSS Feed)
Aug. 13, 2008 (CWNews.com) - The Vatican has ruled that the Name of God, commonly rendered as "Yahweh," should not be pronounced in the Catholic liturgy. The Vatican directive will not require any changes in the language of liturgy, since the Name of God is not spelled out in any authorized translation of the Roman Missal. However some hymns may be deemed inappropriate for liturgical use.
The Congregation for Divine Worship, in issuing the new directive, reminds bishops that in the Hebrew tradition, which the early Christians adopted, the faithful avoided pronouncing the Name of God. The Vatican directive explains that "as an expression of the infinite greatness and majesty of God, it was held to be unpronounceable." In place of the Name of God, pious Hebrews used the four-letter tetragammaton YHWH, or substituted the terms "Adonai" or "the Lord." The first Christians continued this practice, the Vatican notes.
The Congregation for Divine Worship observes that the invocation of "the Lord" in Scriptural text follows this practice. Thus when St. Paul prays that "every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord," the Vatican letter says that his statement "corresponds exactly to a proclamation of [Christ's] divinity." The Bible reflects the Hebrew tradition, and the Name of God is not spelled out in authorized Catholic translations. The Vatican instruction says that liturgical language should adhere carefully to the Scriptural texts, so that the Word of God is "conserved and transmitted in an integral and faithful manner."
However, the instruction notes, "in recent years the practice has crept in" of using the Name of God and spelling out the tetragrammaton. That practice should be avoided in the Catholic liturgy, the Vatican says. The effect of the Vatican directive should be evident in the selection of hymns, since some contemporary liturgical music violates the policy by pronouncing the Name of God. The policy will also call for some care in the preparation of variable elements in the liturgy, such as the Prayers of the Faithful.
The letter from the Congregation for Divine Worship, dated June 29, was signed by Cardinal Francis Arinze (bio - news) and Archbishop Malcom Ranjith, the prefect and secretary, respectively of that congregation. In an August 8 letter to the bishops of the US hierarchy, relaying the Vatican directive, Bishop Arthur Serratelli-- the chairman of the US bishops' liturgy committee-- welcomed the instruction, saying that it "helps to emphasize the theological accuracy of our language and appropriate reverence for the name of God."

Recent Letter from the Curia

To the Provincial Priors and the Regents of Studies of the Order

Dear brothers,

Our last General Chapter have underlined the importance of preparing our friars to Inter-religious dialogue, which is becoming a major issue in many areas of the world. This is especially true about relationships with Islam.

IDEO, the Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies, based in Cairo is willing to offer its contribution through a two-week workshop in Cairo for English speaking Dominican students at the beginning of July 2009 (1-15 July). We have in Cairo several friars well prepared for that, an excellent library and very good contacts with Muslim leaders and friends able to offer a real immersion to our visitors.

This two-week program in Cairo will articulate three elements:

1. Lectures on the basic topics of Islam and inter-religious dialogue
2. Visit of significant places (Al-Azhar University, mosques, etc.)
3. Personal contacts

A visit to Mt. Sinai will be organized at the end of the workshop and an academic credit might be given at the end of the workshop, if asked by the regents of studies.

IDEO would like to welcome 1 or 2 students from each English speaking province and friars from other provinces more fluent in English. Maximum possible: from 12-15 friars.

IDEO has received a grant from a foundation to help organize this workshop and will pay for the board and lodging. The provinces will only have to pay the tickets to Cairo and provide some pocket money. If some help is needed, this might be considered case by case.

Thanks for making known this proposal in your province and supporting it, especially through the Student Masters. Application forms will be sent in September 2008. Any suggestion is welcome. Contact jjp@op.org

Yours in St. Dominic
